Luminol is a chemiluminescent substance that can be used as a presumptive test for the presence of blood.
Using the peroxidase-like activity of the heme portion of hemoglobin, luminol produces a bluish-white light that can be viewed in total darkness.
Invisible bloodstains react with the luminol reagent, emitting luminescence; darkness is crucial.
It can also be photographed or recorded on video with the aid of the SIRCHIE® KRIMESITE™ IMAGER.
This is a very useful test for searching for blood over large areas, especially if the area has been cleaned.
